John Bennet was born in 1788 to John and Elizabeth (nee Suffield), the second of their five children. He was baptised on 15th June 1788 at Beaulieu church.
Sarah Carpenter was born in 1796 to Charles and Hannah Carpenter. She was also baptised at Beaulieu church on 21st February 1796.
John and Sarah were married on 7th February 1819 at Beaulieu church by the curate Henry Adams. They lived at Bailey's Hard where John worked as a brickmaker.
The brickworks there operated from 1790 until 1935. His employment there pre-dates the surviving downdraught kiln that can still be seen there.
Sarah and John became members of East Boldre's Baptist church when they were baptised at the chapel on 16th April 1837.
Sarah was buried at East Boldre's chapel on 10th December 1847 by William Mursell.
In 1851 John Bennett, aged 62, was living in Baileys Hard with a servant, Ann Renyard. He was still working at the brickyard.
John was buried at the chapel on 16th December 1860 by the Rev John Bartlett Burt,
This gravestone also commemorates their son Charles, who was born in 1821 and he was baptised on 4th April 1821. He died just weeks later and was buried at Beaulieu church on 2nd June.
The epitaph is typical of 19th century graveyard poetry and this poem occurs on headstones across the UK and US although its author is unknown.
